FREE kid-friendly fun in Prince George this February 2013

This month is packed full of great FREE kid-friendly fun in Prince George this February 2013 .  This month enjoy some fireworks, go for a swim, build a Popsicle stick bridge,  build a snow creation, and much more – All for FREE!

Free Dinner and Movie at the South Fort George Family Resource Centre – Thursday February 7th, 3:30pm

Celebrate Family Day early with a free dinner then watch Ice Age: Continental Drift with the family!  Check out the poster here.

Fireworks at The Exploration Place – Saturday February 9th, 6:00pm-6:30pm

It is the Year of the Snake and The Exploration Place is celebrating with a bang!  There 10th annual Chinese New Year Gala Fundraiser is all sold out, but you can bundle up the family and enjoy the amazing fireworks display!  The building is closed for the special event.  Make sure to bring your own hot chocolate and whatever else you need to be comfortable outside.

Celebrate BC’s First Family Day at The Exploration Place – Monday February 11th, 10:00am-4:00pmBC Family Day

The Province of BC has worked with different community partners around British Columbia to create affordable opportunities for families on our very first Family Day!  On February 11th, head out with the family and take advantage of FREE admission to The Exploration Place!  This is a great place to get a hands-on experience where you and your family can discover dinosaurs, meet some live critters, learn about regional history and more!  For more information about this event, and other BC family day events around the province, check out their website here.

Family Day Yoga at Chinook – Monday February 11th, 3:00pm-4:00pm (registration required)

Chinook is offering a class that will have simple and fun yoga designed for kids and parents.  Space is limited so make sure to register for the class here.

Two Year ‘Til the Games – Community Celebration – Friday February 15th, 5:00pm-7:00pm

The 2015 Canadian Winter Games are coming to Prince George in two years!  Head downtown to the Canada Games House, at 545 Quebec Street, and get ready for some fun!  There will be activities for the kids like lantern making with Two Rivers Art Gallery and magnetic fishing with The Exploration Place.  Make sure to head downtown and enjoy live entertainment, demonstrations, giveaways, fireworks and more, all for FREE!

Wendy’s Kids Fun Fair – Saturday February 16th, 10:00am-4:00pm

Head down to the Connaught Youth Centre for some fun, games and prizes. Admission is free and tickets to play the games are 0.50 cents.  Check out the Mardi Gras Snow Daze Facebook event for more information here.

YMCA of Northern BC Free Family Day – Sunday February 17th, 12:00pm-3:00pm

There will be FREE activities, crafts and games for infants, toddlers and school aged children 6-12 years old.  You can also enter to win a three month Family membership and Aurora Leadership registration. 

Free Swim at Four Seasons Leisure Pool – Sunday February 17th, 4:00pm-6:00pm

Pack your swim suite, towel, don’t forget the kids, and head over to the Four Season Leisure Pool on Sunday February 17th for a free swim sponsored by Canadian Tire.

The Ultimate Bridge Building Contest at Pine Centre Mall – Saturday February 23rd,  11:00am-2:30pm

Get together 100 Popsicle sticks, some all-purpose white glue and see how strong you can build the Ultimate Bridge!  You can pick up building kit at Pine Centre Mall on Saturday February 2nd to enter the contest.  This contest is for children in grades 1-3, grades 4-7 and teens in grades 8-12.  Registration for this event is FREE, however a donation of non perishable food item for the food bank is suggested.  You will also be able to test your knowledge of rocks and check out some other engineering and science displays!  Make sure to check out the the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of B.C page for rules and other important guidelines for your bridge!

Mardi Gras Snow Daze Snowman Building Contest:  Runs from Friday January 11th to February 24th

Have you and your family ventured outside to create the ultimate snow creation yet?  You can still enter your families snow creation in the Mardi Gras Snow Daze Snowman Building Contest.  Submit your picture to the Prince George Free Press by dropping of a photo or emailing your picture to  Each week a winner is chosen to win $100 cash!

There’s more…on Sunday February 24th, from 12:oopm-4:00pm, there is a snow creation contest at the PG Golf and Curling Club!  Everyone is invited to come out and build their ultimate snow creation and be entered to win!  The top prize is a $1000 downtown Prince George shopping spree, 2nd place is $500 cash and 3rd place is $250 cash.

 Other great Free kid-friendly activities in Prince George from January 2013

The Prince George Public Library events page lists all the free family drop-in programs at the Bob Harkins branch and Nechako branch.  Programs include Baby Time for babies 0-11 months old, Toddler Time for children 1-3 years old, Lego club for children 6-12 years old, Family Story Time, and Family Movie Saturdays.

Strong Start BC programs are great free drop in programs for children in various locations around Prince George.

The Power Play Program at the South Fort George Family Resource Centre for children ages 0-5 and an accompanying adult.  Children have the opportunity to learn important life skills through play!

Community outdoor rinks are free with the exception of the Ice Oval.

Once you have the toboggan, snow gear and helmet head out to a hill and go tobogganing in Prince George.
