What inspired you to purchase the business from the original owner?
I’ve always had an interest in business. I grew up in a household where my family had a home based business which led me into completing a diploma for Marketing and Management at the College of New Caledonia.. When our son was born we fell in love with cloth diapering, when my friend said she was thinking of selling Cozy Bums it seemed like the perfect opportunity for my family and I.
One of the concerns was that my business is in my home so I never get to leave work. I could work 24/7 if I want. You definitely have to learn to separate your family life and your work life because work is everywhere in my home. I try to set business hours when I am home.
What did you find was the biggest learning curve when you started Cozy Bums?
Learning how to manage a website, social media, and keeping up on inventory, knowing when to order and knowing what supplier to order from had a huge learning curve.
What do you find are the most effective tools to market your business?
Word of mouth has been amazing for Cozy Bums ever since it started. There is a great local community in Prince George that is very supportive of Cozy Bums. Our customers are amazing! If you go to our website and check out our customer reviews, people have such great things to say about our products, customer service and how fast we ship out orders for customers all across Canada.
I also really focus on making sure my customer service is top notch. I try to make sure parents get started with a good quality product they are going to love from start to finish. I’m here to help with trouble shooting purchasing, providing workshops for local customers and provide information on the reasons why we cloth diaper. By choosing cloth diapers you will see many benefits including financial savings (as much as thousands of dollars from birth to potty learning), the peace of mind knowing that there are no chemicals against their skin and that we are not adding more garbage into our landfill. Oh, and they are super cute!
I also try to get out to community events when I can. I just started doing an introduction to cloth diapers at the Sears Baby Shower Events and I also work with Welcome Wagon, PGWAHM and host the Guiness Book of Records Great Cloth Diaper Change Event.
How would you describe your typical work day?
Monday thru Wednesday I typically work eight hours a day. Thursday and Friday’s are my date days with my son, so I typically work three to four hours each day. This doesn’t include some of the time I put towards answering emails and messages after my son goes to bed. I try to keep Saturday and Sundays for family and try not to walk into the store those days unless there is a customer from out of town.
While I’m working my son spends time with my mom. Sometimes he comes down and tries to help me. He loves to help answer the door and he thanks people when they leave. It’s really cute to see him help out. He likes to tell people he works for Cozy Bums.
What has been one of the hurdles you faced with Cozy Bums?
I would say knowing how to take time out for my family and when to shut down. I can be physical a presence in the room typing on the computer but not focused on my family at that time. I’ve had to learn to close the lid on the computer and enjoy my family because children grow up so fast. On the weekends we go out and do things together as a family.
If there was one piece of advice you could give another mom about running a successful business, what would it be?
Take quality time out for your family! It’s important for me to remember that I’m running my business because I love it and also I’m doing it for the people I love.
If you had to do it all over again, is there anything you would do differently?
Everything that I’ve done (good and bad) since I started Cozy Bums has been a lesson. I don’t regret anything I’ve done because that’s how you learn.
We are always bringing in new products that are announced on the Cozy Bums Facebook page. In the future, when my son starts elementary school, my goal is to expand Cozy Bums.
I will be participating in some upcoming community events such as the Great Cloth Diaper Change on April 20th, 2013 at exactly 11:00am; this is a free event and we hope to break the Guinness World Record for the most people changing cloth diapers all around the world at the exact same moment! You can also come see me at the PGWAHM tradeshow on April 13, 2013.
