Free kid-friendly activities in Prince George this January 2013
There are many free kid-friendly activities in Prince George this month. If your News Years resolution is to keep more money in your pocket, then check out the events below for some free family fun! These events are great way to get out of the house this winter!
Mardi Gras Snow Daze Snowman Building Contest: Runs from Friday January 11th to February 24th
Venture outside to your front yard with your kids, bring your camera and create the ultimate snowman starting January 11th. The contest runs for 6 weeks and each week a winner will be chosen. Everyone is welcome to join in by submitting a picture of their snowman to the Prince George Free Press.
Free Swim at Four Seasons Leisure Pool: Sunday January 13th, 4:00pm-6:00pm
Head to the pool on Sunday January 13th from 4:00pm-6:00pm for a free swim sponsored by Save On Foods! They will be another free swim on Sunday February 17th from 4:00pm-6:00pm sponsored by Canadian Tire.
Tourism Prince George Take On 2013 : Saturday January 19th, 10:00am-2:00pm
This free family event includes free admission to The Exploration Place along with candle dipping, snow painting, snowshoeing, story time, a petting zoo and some lunch. Don’t worry if you do not have your own snowshoes because, as long as the weather is good, you can borrow a pair from The Exploration Place! There will also be groomed ski trails throughout the park so bring your own cross country skis to enjoy the trails! This will be a great event so get ready for some indoor and outdoor winter fun!
PG Skates: Sunday January 20th, 1:00pm-3:00pm
Grab your skates and head over to the Prince George Ice Oval behind the CN Centre for the 3rd annual PG Skates event. Enjoy free skating, hot chocolate, face painting, clowns, music and enjoy skating outside with your family and friends!
PGYMCA Open House: Sunday January 20th, 12:00pm-3:00pm
Head to the PGYMCA for free access to the entire building! There will be specific activities that the family can do together. Also, you will be able to enter to win a 3 month family membership or Aurora Leadership Program registration.
NEW! Coldsnap Winter Music Festival: January 18th to 26th
Coldsnap, the Prince George Winter Music Festival, has a variety of free music workshops. For more detailed information go to their webpage and scroll to the bottom of the page to check out all the workshops!
Prince George Public Library
The Prince George Public Library has so many different free family drop-in programs for babies, toddlers, school aged children and the whole family at the Bob Harkins branch and Nechako branch. Children need to be accompanied by an adult to attend programs. Programs include Baby Time for babies 0-11 months old, Toddler Time for children 1-3 years old, Lego club for children 6-12 years old, Family Story Time, and Family Movie Saturdays.
Celebrate Family Literacy day on Saturday January 26th from 1:00pm-3:00pm at the Bob Harkins branch with Munsch Mania! There will be Robert Munsch stories and activities throughout the library. Make sure to check out their events page for additional information.
Strong Start BC
This is a great free drop in program for children in various locations around Prince George. Children need to be accompanied by an adult to attend. These are great programs lead by qualified Early Childhood Educators who organize activities such as story time, music, activities and snack. It is a great program where you can meet other moms in your area and provide your child with the opportunity to learn how to interact with other children and participate in group activities.
Community Outdoor Ice Rinks
There are many outdoor rinks and there might be one in your neighborhood! The City of Prince George has a map and list of community outdoor rinks. All outdoor rinks are free with the exception of the Ice Oval.
Power Play
The Power Play Program at the South Fort George Family Resource Centre is for children ages 0-5 and an accompanying adult. Children have the opportunity to learn important life skills through play such as problem solving, social interaction and build their self-esteem!
