As soon as you walk into Rolly Rocket’s BBQ at the corner of King and Locke Streets in Hamilton the aromas wafting through the restaurant will have your mouth watering. The no-fuss atmosphere is welcoming and you’ll be greeted by friendly staff ready to take your order.
Rolly’s philosophy (and yes, there really is a Rolly) is to serve home made food just like Mom would make, in a friendly setting. Ordering is done at the counter and your food will be brought to your table by a server. Super-casual picnic tables are available for seating and there are also tables and chairs. In line with the no-fuss theme, a roll of brown paper towels adorns each table. And trust me, you will need them if you choose not to lick the delectable BBQ sauce from your fingers.
Their menu items are made with fresh ingredients and all meat is dry rubbed with spices then hickory smoked. Pork, chicken, ribs, and catfish are all on offer and can be ordered a-la-carte or as a dinner. Dinners include fresh-baked cornbread, a side of beans, a side of “slaw” and your choice of regular or sweet potato fries. Smoking results in rib meat that falls off the bone, chicken that is juicy and moist, and the best pulled-pork you have ever tasted. Add extra sauce to your meal if you like as bottles of their special sauces, Smokey Mild Tequila, Tangy BBQ and Spicy BBQ will be brought to your table. This City Mom’s favourite menu items: Pork Knuckles with a side of Sweet Potato Fries or a Quarter Chicken dinner.
Kid-friendly Rolly Rocket’s BBQ is nice and roomy and your stroller will be welcomed and will easily fit beside your table. Don’t worry if your toddler wants to wander, there’s ample space and the casual vibe means you won’t have to fret about your kids making noise. High chairs are also available.
A favourite spot for those that live in the neighbourhood, Rolly’s is also a great place for a casual night out, sans-kids. Live bands, Karaoke, and with a 1950’s Rock a Billy night the first Saturday of every month, a good time is sure to be had by all. One regular band worth a mention is Liam’s Kitchen Party featuring “The Good, The Bad & The Ugly”. This live act is led by a pre-teen fiddler who will knock your socks off. Check Rolly Rocket’s website for more live music and event listings.
If you’re looking for an upscale restaurant and a super-healthy meal, this isn’t the place, but if you’re looking for finger-licking, delicious, real BBQ food and a friendly atmosphere, Rolly Rocket’s BBQ is the spot for you.
